I have not stopped thinking about my college admissions essay. My original schedule had me finishing a first draft by the 4th of July but that is not going to happen so I have redone the spread sheet; you have to be flexible. Besides, the Grandpop Walker idea didn’t go anywhere. It just sat there saying “No, this will not get you into Swarthmore.”
I considered (for a second, that was it!) trying to make it more dramatic but saying that Grandpop Walker was really sick now and how that made me feel – the whole carpe diem thing – but the truth is he’s still playing tennis – singles! – and… well, that would be kind of ugly.
So back to the old drawing board, even though I still draw like I’m in the fourth grade. (ha!).

I took Buttons for a long walk this afternoon which I hardly ever do but I thought it could be a good chance to brainstorm on a new topic for my college admissions essay. And that’s exactly what happened! I am now going to answer prompt # 3 on the Common Application – Reflect on a time when you challenged a belief or idea. What prompted you to act? Would you make the same decision again?
My thinking is that everyone – especially that guy who came to our school to talk about college essays and thought he was so funny. Ugh! Dude. Get some new jokes. – always says you have to write about something that only you could write. So I am going to write about canceling my Facebook account last year, even though everyone I know believes that FB is like air, you can’t live without it. But once I charted how many hours a week I spent reading other people’s posts or looking at the Mickey Mouse pancakes they made for breakfast, I realized that I probably could have read 1.73 new books a week instead. So I canceled my account and even though everyone was shocked, I’m still happy I did it. Not that I’m reading any extra books a week (although for the sake of the essay I will probably say I’m reading one) but it was still a smart thing to do. I think it will make a good essay and show that I’m an independent thinker and lots of other good things. Yay!
I’m going to get up early tomorrow and write an outline for this, before we go to Aunt Robin’s for the barbecue.
